ISLAMABAD (Eshfak Mughal) ; The capacity payments of different power producers have been increased to Rs19 per unit due to free fall of Pakistani Rupee against US Dollar, the Federal Ministry of Power claims in new estimates.
According to the authorities of the Ministry of Power, the capacity payments have been reached to Rs2152 billion during the current fiscal year mainly due to currency devaluation. The estimates of the ministry of power show that if USD blinking on Rs.300, the capacity payment of different power producers have been surged to Rs.19 per unit.
It is pertinent to mention here that the govt has fixed the electricity rate at Rs42 per unit while incorporating Rs19 per as capacity charges.
The capacity payments of the power producer plants were estimates Rs2008 billion as the govt has made budget with the exchange rate of Rs185 in June. The exchange rate has been crossed to Rs300 due to different reasons. The govt has prepared new estimates and claimed that the country has to pay Rs.2152 billion capacity payment which is more than double from Public Sector Development Plan (PSDP) and more than defense budget of the current fiscal year.

According to the authorities of the ministry of power, the capacity payments would be Rs1082 billion if the value of local currency remain around Rs100. In this case, the impact of the capacity charges would be Rs10 per unit.
The data shows that the capacity payment would be increased to Rs1617 billion if USD remains limit to Rs200. The impact of the capacity payment would be Rs14 per unit.
The govt would pay Rs643 billion to the coal power plants which have capacity of 6777 megawatt. This will be biggest chunk of capacity payments which will goes to the coal power payments.
The second highest capacity payments were estimated for nuclear power plants in the country. The government would likely to pay Rs510 billion to the nuclear payments which have capacity to generate 3266 megawatt.
The government would likely to pay Rs255 billion to the hydel IPPs which have capacity of 2215 megawatt during the current fiscal year due to Rs300/USD. The renewable power plants will get Rs260 billion as capacity payments which are producing 2887 megawatt during the current fiscal year.
The WAPDA’s IPPs would likely to get Rs147 billion as capacity payments which have 8578 megawatt.
