ISLAMABAD (Eshfak Mughal): The federal government is likely to appoint Member Inland Revenue Operations Malik Amjad Zubair Tiwana as new Chairman Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).
Chairman FBR Asim Ahmed was retired from government services after attaining the age limit of 60 years.
Sources said that Tiwana held meetings with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar on Monday before the expected appointment.
Currently, Tiwana, BS 21 of Inland Revenue Service, posted as Member of IR Operation.
Sources said that the Finance ministry got approval through circulation of appointment of Tiwana as new boss of country’s tax authority, sources told the scribe.
Finance Ministry has recommended three names including Malik Amjad Zubair Tiwana, Syed Nadeem Rizvi, BS 22 of Inland Revenue Service, Member Admin FBR Nadeem Rizvi and Secretary Power Arshad Mahmood Langrial names for chairman FBR Slot.
Sources said that Tiwana is junior officers from around 20 to 25 officers of Inland Revenue service and Customs Service Group. It is not first time that a junior officer is being appointed as chairman. Every Finance Minister chooses its close aid for this post whether he belongs to inside or outside from the FBR.
It is important to mention here that, Tiwana has also worked as Staff Officer to the Former Chairman FBR Tariq Pasha who is currently Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Revenue and close aid of Finance Minister Ishaq Dar.
Sources said that the major challenge for Tiwana as chairman FBR to follow the target of tax collection which was assigned by the IMF. The Finance Minister had promised to achieve the target of tax collection worth Rs.9415 billion for the current fiscal year.
Sources told the scribe that the FBR has collected Rs.536 billion against the target of Rs.534 billion during July 2023.
